Last Thursday, I went to the Little Black Dress Party in Roanoke to raise money for Children's Miracle Network. It was held at Metro in Roanoke and was a great atmosphere!
A graduate student on her way to a PHD blogs about life in pageants, politics, and research.
Born in Chicago and raised among the corn fields and John Deere tractors of northwest Ohio, I've been blessed to travel to and live in several states and cities. I recently graduated from a woman's college in Virginia with degrees in economics and political science and I'm earning my masters in political science at Virginia Tech. During my junior year, I studied for 10 months in Reading, England. During my year in England, I wrote an unpublished (as of yet) novel, visited the House of Commons and Lords, and dove into British politics and culture, all while sharing a house with 8 other women.
A former spelling bee champion, I spend most of my free time reading books. My first political campaign was Clinton/Gore 1992, and I have grown to love politics throughout my childhood and teen years. I plan to pursue a masters and later doctorate in political science, aiming to conduct research and teach in the field of international relations and military affairs.
Tap dancing since the age of 3, I have only been involved in pageantry since age 16 when a friend dared me to "enter a beauty pageant in a pink dress". Six years later, I have grown leaps and bounds from that performance and fully believe in the statement that Miss America pageants are the best self-improvement courses you can ever take. I've also been able to turn my passion for domestic violence advocacy into a community and statewide project, working for the interests of victims in legal changes and direct contact initiatives.
